The First China National Earth Intelligence Day was held in Wuhan on 16–17 October 2026. Hosted by Wuhan University on behalf of the China Science and Technology Exchange Center (GEO China Secretariat), the event brought together representatives from government, research institutions, universities and industry to discuss Earth Intelligence and international cooperation. Yubao Qiu, a researcher at the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, represented the GEO Cold Regions Initiative (GEOCRI) and delivered a presentation entitled “GEOCRI Development in the Era of Earth Intelligence” during the parallel session on experiences and challenges in GEO international cooperation.
Focusing on the transition from observations to Earth Intelligence, the presentation reviewed GEOCRI’s development and governance, highlighting progress in Essential Cold Regions Variables, data sharing, snow and ice monitoring, and information services for Arctic navigation. It outlined an approach integrating satellite remote sensing, in situ observations, artificial intelligence and big data. In line with GEO Post-2025 Strategy, the presentation identified priorities including high-quality analysis-ready and AI-ready datasets, AI-driven online computing, and user-oriented information services. These efforts aim to translate cold-region Earth observations into decision support for water resources management, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
