2019 HiMAC Seminar on Observations and Assimilation for Lake ice and Sea Ice

On 27th June, 2019, the Working Group on High Mountain and Polar Cold Regions (HiMAC) held a seminar on the lake ice, and sea ice observations and assimilation in Beijing, China. The seminar is supported by INTAROS counterpart project - MARIS (Multi-Parameters Arctic Environmental Observations and Information Services) of MOST in China, and the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

There were more than forty people involved in this special event on the lake ice, and sea ice. The topics included the monitoring of lake changes and its ice coverage over the high mountain Asia, especially the Third Pole, through the space earth observations; sea ice concentration and thickness retrieval in Earth Poles; research on the polar environment change; the remote connection between the lake ice in the inland area, and the sea ice in the North sea area.

The talks are from Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR-CAS), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP-CAS) and Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology (NIGLASCAS) of Chinese Academy of sciences, National Marine Environment Forecasting Center (NMEFC), Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC), Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, Beijing Normal University (BNU), Dalian University of Technology (DUT), and etc.

Scientists from these two project consortium and invited speakers spent one day for the exchanges of the recent findings, and a round-table discussion on the future development of the lake ice, river ice, and sea ice and the hydrological regime (surface water system) in the Greenland by the Earth observations provides a insight for the comparative research for the Earth three poles.

The meeting was hosted in Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, as an interim open discussion and scientific exchanges in 2019.
